Columbia’s Earlewood neighborhood was established in 1910, but the bulk of the neighborhood as we know it today was built in the 1930s.   Some areas of Earlewood reflect building trends of the 1950s and 1960s in street patterns, architectural style, and detailing.  Even today, Earlewood has continued to grow, which is reflected by its diversity today.


Originally owned by the Geiger family, it takes its name from Earlewood Park, named for Columbia attorney John Earle who assisted in the acquisition of the land for the City.  


The homes in Earlewood have considerable historical and architectural significance. The first log cabin in central South Carolina was built in what is now Earlewood. The cabin, an almost perfectly preserved specimen of a frontier type log cabin built of chinked logs and wood pegs, was moved from River Drive to Sesquicentennial State Park and is now restored and opened to the public.  


Architectural styles of the past hundred and fifty years—farm houses, two-story Victorians, craftsman bungalows, brick Shandon-style, ranches and new homes—are found in the neighborhood. Primarily a farming area during the 1800’s, Earlewood has several traditional farm houses from this period. 


Earlewood grew rapidly from 1900 to 1930. The popular Craftsman Bungalow style homes were built on recently platted lots and streets. Over the next fifty years many homes were built in the Shandon Style, a brick bungalow with gabled roofs, and the ranch style. In the 1990’s Earlewood saw a resurgence of new construction as new homes were built with the charm and character of older homes.


The Earlewood neighborhood features homes in a range in price from the low 100’s to the upper 300’s and offer floor plans of 800 square feet to 3400 square feet with 2 to 4 bedrooms and 2 to 3.5 bathrooms. Many feature open floor plans, luxurious master suites, and walk in closets. Most are older homes that have been updated offering vast character and modern convenience.


To give you an idea of the historical significance of this area, the oldest standing building in Richland County was in Earlewood—a log home believed to have been built in 1756 once stood at what is now 3225 River Drive.  In 1961, the home was saved by relocating it to Sesquicentennial State Park in northeast Columbia. The frontier-type cabin— older than the City of Columbia itself—has been restored and is now protected in the park’s boundaries.


Located between River Drive and North Main Street, Earlewood Park is one of the oldest and largest parks in the city—the centerpiece of the neighborhood.  Residents of the city are fortunate to have a place to “get away from it all” in our neighborhood parks—Earlewood Park and Marshall Park—as well as the nearby Three Rivers Greenway.  Maintained and kept safe by the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department, Earlewood Park and Marshall Park offer an opportunity to get some exercise, enjoy the outdoor space, and more.


Described as “an urban forest that covers sixty-six acres of rolling hills and valleys and mature groves of trees,” the park is noted for its many varieties of wild flowers it is one of the largest and most natural parks in Columbia.  It also has a community center, an amphitheater, a walking track, a disc golf course, tennis courts and two baseball fields.  The walking track, just off S. Main Street, is .2 miles with large shade trees, open grass and a view of the Smith Branch Creek.  The packed sand trail is great for both walkers and runners.


Less than one mile from Earlewood is the Broad River Dam access point to the Three Rivers Greenway and the Columbia Canal off of Broad River Road. The Greenway has miles of lighted and paved trails, boardwalks and overlooks.  It is open for walking, running or bicycling.


Marshall Park is a small community park in Earlewood bordered by Lincoln, Union, Florence and Richfield Streets.  It also has many trees and hills and is popular with dog owners who often walk their pets in the park.


Residents in this neighborhood have access to everything that downtown Columbia has to offer, which includes shopping, University of South Carolina, and a large variety of restaurants.  Students residing in the Earlewood neighborhood attend Logan Elementary, St. Andrews Middle School, and Columbia High School.
